His snooker was brilliant; his press conference eye watering, and should Mark Williams win the World Snooker Championship next year the Crucible is in for a treat.
Williams rolled back the years and held off a spirited fightback from fellow veteran John Higgins to win the World Championship for a third time.
The victory justified Williams’ decision to continue his career, having given serious thought to quitting when his form deserted him.
After completing his 18-16 win, Williams conducted his press conference naked – and subsequently went on all night party which he kept people up to date on via Twitter.
But prior to the celebrations, Williams promised something even more extravagant should he defend the title in 12 months’ time.
“If I won this again next year, I’d do this again – I’d cartwheel round here naked,” the Welshman said, per Sporting Life.
The Crucible success capped a brilliant season that saw Williams also claim the Northern Ireland Open and German Masters, and he admitted how close he was to walking away from the game.
“It’s an unbelievable story,” Williams said. “Twelve months ago I was thinking about chucking it in, and here I am doing an interview having won the 2018 World Championship, naked.
“I thought these days had all passed to be honest.”
It’s to snooker’s benefit that Williams did not pack away his cue. The form he demonstrated throughout the season was on show at the World Championship as he saw off Jimmy Robertson, Robert Milkins, Ali Carter and Kyren Wilson on the way to the final.
He was never tested on the run to the final, so the one question that needed to be answered was how would he cope if he was put under the pump.
At 14-7 ahead, it did not look like it was going to happen but Higgins produced some stunning snooker to claw himself level at 15-15. However, from there Williams dug deep and found the brilliant potting that has been the hallmark of his career and he was able to wrap up the final and celebrate victory with his wife and children.
Much can happen in the next year, but those who would relish the prospect of a naked Welshman cartwheeling around the Crucible can back him at 13.0 with 188BET to win a fourth World Championship in 2019.
The market is headed by this year’s beaten favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan who is priced at 4.35 to win the title for a sixth time.
